Sensors for Household Appliances

In recent years, the wave of smart home appliances has swept across, leading home appliance companies have begun to build their own smart home appliance system. The first step is to use sensors to accurately collect data, and then perform intelligent calculation and processing. More and more household appliances are beginning to integrate various sensors with intelligent sensing functions to cope with the market trend.

Air Conditioner

Air Quality Sensor

When using air conditioners, the room and windows are closed and lack of ventilation, the indoor air quality deteriorates as time goes long. CO2 , TVOC, temperature and humidity, etc are factors to influence the air quality. The fresh air or air purifying function of smart conditioners mostly measure concentration of these gases, then ventilate fresh air into the room while filtering harmful gases to improve and maintain the air quality.

A variety of sensors to integrate on smart air conditioner: CO2 carbon dioxide sensor, PM2.5 particulate matter sensor, CH2O formaldehyde sensor, temperature and humidity sensor, etc.

Besides the air quality sensors, smart air conditioning can also integrate human induction sensor module, refrigerant leakage detection module.

Human induction module

The human induction module can recognize human heat source, and shift to economic (ECO) or energy saving mode when people leave, and can also intelligently recognize people location to avoid direct wind blow.

Refrigerant Detection Module

The refrigerant used in frequency conversion air conditioner is R22, R410a or R32, especially R32 refrigerant, which is prone to explosion in case of flame, and leakage detection of flammable refrigerant can alarm the risks and improve safety.

Pressure Sensor/Transmitter

Pressure sensors and transmitters are widely used in Air Conditioning, Air Compressor, Refrigeration and Heat Pump system to control and guarantee the system working under safe and stability condition.

Air purifier, HVAC system

A mature solution of air purifier usually integrates with wind pressure and flow sensor, air quality sensor, PM2.5 sensor, CO2 sensor, CH2O sensor, temperature&humidity sensor, O3 sensor, etc. These sensors can also be integrated in HVAC system to realize linkage control, automatic start&stop, flow volume adjustment through setting target parameters.

Gas Leakage

Smart alarm of gas leakage

Natural gas is popular in home and small commercial occasions use but it’s prone to combustion and explosion. If leakage happen, the accidents are fatal and lead to mass property loss.The combustible gas sensor or module can detect gas leakage(CH4 methane, LPG gas, etc.) and alarm risks in real time; with the linkage of mechanical device, gas valve can be closed automatically.

Gas Heater Security

Gas heater is popular in many families due to its fast heating and economic cost. Beside the natural gas leakage, the inefficient combustion of gas produces CO carbon monoxide which is odorless called the silent killer and cause breath suffocation if there is no good ventilation. Therefore, people are concerned with the safety of gas heaters, and suppliers are constantly improving the safety property performance.

For gas stove, and gas heaters, the natural gas sensor, CH4 methane gas sensor, CO carbon monoxide gas sensor and the modules can be used to detect and monitor the gas leakage in real time and ensure the security.

Kitchen Appliance Sensors

Smart Range Hood

Automatic power on/off, adjust and control wind volume of the range hood, there are different sensing solutions, such as smoke sensor, temperature sensor, VOC sensor, infrared particle sensor and laser particle sensor.

Boil-dry Protection

When people are cooking, they often forget to turn off the fire when answering the phone, or even forget to turn off the fire when going out, which causing the pot to burn dry and lead to fire accidents. Therefore, boil-dry preventive function is more and more popular and even to become the standard configuration of high-end kitchen appliances.

The anti-boil dry technology actually uses temperature control sensors and thermistors to sense, with real-time temperature monitoring, and its core component is the anti-dry burner top. Compared with the traditional stove, the difference is that a temperature sensor is installed in the anti-boil dry burner top. By measuring the temperature of the bottom of the pot, it is compared with the preset temperature threshold (such as 270°C). As long as the pot bottom temperature is higher than 270°C, it will be judged that dry burning has occurred; or through collection of temperature information for a period of time, calculate the temperature change rate, and automatically select the threshold value for starting the anti-dry burning function accordingly, and finally as long as the change is higher than the threshold, it is judged that dry burning has occurred, and then the gas source is cut off to prevent combustion.

Anti boil-dry function use the mode of temperature detection + gas cut-off. There are other modes like temperature detection+flame adjustment, or temperature detection+flame adjustment+gas cut off, etc. All these modes use the basic technology of temperature monitoring in real time to achieve automatic control.

MRTD3011 Digital Thermopile Temperature Sensor

Temperature sensors are integrated at various points in a heating system. MRTD3011 is also used in many home appliances:

Smart air conditioner/ fan: to detect people position and avoid direct blow.

Smart hair dryer: to adjust wind volume and temperature according to the hair temperature, and prevent harm to to the hair.

Smart oven/microwave ovens:to adjust heating power through detecting temperature of food.

Electric rice cooker:to adjust heating through detecting temperature of rice.

Other small appliances: coffee maker , dish washing machine, ice maker, tea maker, kettle, toaster, bottle warmer, electric grill, portable cooker, and food processors more energy efficient, safer and more convenient to use.

Water Purifier

TDS indicates how many milligrams of dissolved solids are dissolved in 1 liter of water. The higher the TDS value, the more dissolved substances are contained in the water, and the lower the TDS value, the purer the water quality. TDS water quality sensors are generally used in water purifiers to detect drinking water quality.

Cleaning Appliances

Various cleaning device have released people from tedious housework, such as vacuum cleaners, floor washing machines, sweeping robots, mite removers, etc. Commonly used sensors in these devices are dust detection sensor, VOC detection senor, temperature and humidity sensor.


Refrigerator Sensors

The spoilage of food, the reproduction of bacteria and microorganisms are often accompanied by the release of organic volatiles, and the VOC sensor can cooperate with the air circulation system of the refrigerator to effectively monitor the organic volatiles in every corner of the refrigerator: such as the odor produced during the process of food decay, ammonia substances of rotten eggs, nitrogen gases, sulfur and other substances.

Freshness Detection Module ZE03

CO2 gas can effectively prevent the growth of aerobic bacteria and mold, so injecting a certain concentration of carbon dioxide gas can prolong the food preservation time. But at the same time, excess CO2 gas can also affect the quality of food, causing it to lose moisture and flavor. The carbon dioxide sensor can detect real-time carbon dioxide gas concentration in the refrigerator to keep it at an appropriate amount and prolong the freshness of food.
