INTELLIGENT VENTILATION

Why Air Quality Sensors Matter in Fresh Air Systems

Fresh-air ventilation systems introduce outdoor air and remove indoor air to support building ventilation. Sensor data helps equipment manufacturers respond to changing indoor conditions while considering outdoor pollution, filtration and environmental comfort.

A Smarter Approach to Indoor and Outdoor Air

Indoor ventilation demand and outdoor air quality are related but different monitoring objectives. A well-designed ventilation system evaluates the measurements that are relevant to each function.

  • Indoor CO₂: provides information about ventilation demand in occupied spaces.
  • Particle monitoring: helps assess airborne particle levels and can support filtration-related functions.
  • VOC and HCHO: provide additional information about selected indoor gaseous pollutants.
  • Temperature and humidity: support indoor environmental monitoring and ventilation equipment controls.
  • Outdoor air conditions: may be considered when designing intake air quality and filtration strategies.
Fresh air ventilation monitoring parameters for indoor air quality and outdoor air pollution awareness
Indoor ventilation demand and outdoor pollution awareness are distinct monitoring functions. Sensor selection and outdoor environmental protection depend on equipment requirements.
Important: A standard indoor PM or gas sensor module should not automatically be considered suitable for direct outdoor exposure. Outdoor sampling requires verification of operating temperature, humidity, condensation protection, enclosure and environmental durability.
VENTILATION SENSING PARAMETERS

ZPS20 / ZP07
HCHO

Formaldehyde

Dedicated electrochemical HCHO sensors support formaldehyde measurement in fresh-air equipment with specific HCHO monitoring functions.

VOC vs. formaldehyde: Broad semiconductor VOC responses are not equivalent to dedicated, selective formaldehyde concentration measurement. Select an HCHO-specific module when formaldehyde concentration is a defined product requirement.
FROM SENSING TO CONTROL

How Sensors Support Smart Fresh Air Ventilation Control

Environmental sensors provide measurement signals to the ventilation controller. The OEM defines how those signals influence fan operation, damper position, filtration functions, warnings and environmental feedback.

STEP 01

Environmental Detection

Monitor selected CO₂, PM, VOC, HCHO, temperature or humidity parameters.

STEP 02

Controller Processing

Receive sensor data, perform signal processing and evaluate operating conditions.

STEP 03

Ventilation Response

Adjust fan speed or other equipment functions according to validated control logic.

STEP 04

Continuous Feedback

Updated measurements help the controller evaluate changing indoor conditions.

Smart fresh air control workflow connecting sensors ventilation controller fan filtration and air quality feedback
Conceptual ventilation workflow. Specific control thresholds, equipment interfaces and operating logic are defined by the OEM.
Ventilation safety: Elevated outdoor particle levels should not automatically trigger complete fresh-air shutdown. Control design should consider required ventilation, filtration capability, indoor conditions and applicable building requirements.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Fresh Air & Ventilation Sensor FAQs

Common questions about ventilation air-quality monitoring, ERV/HRV sensing, CO₂ control, PM2.5 detection and OEM integration.

Why do fresh air systems use CO₂ sensors?

CO₂ sensors provide concentration data that can help evaluate ventilation demand in occupied indoor spaces. The ventilation controller uses the data according to the OEM's control strategy.

Should a fresh air system measure indoor and outdoor PM2.5?

Indoor and outdoor particle measurements can provide different information. Whether both are needed depends on the monitoring and filtration objectives. Sensors intended for outdoor sampling require suitable environmental protection and validation.

What sensors are useful for ERV and HRV systems?

Depending on equipment functions, ERV/HRV systems may use temperature, humidity, CO₂ and additional air-quality sensors. The sensors provide environmental measurements, while airflow and energy recovery performance require appropriate system-level evaluation.

Can VOC sensors replace formaldehyde sensors?

A broad semiconductor VOC sensor does not directly replace a dedicated HCHO sensor when specific formaldehyde concentration measurement is required.

Can air quality sensors automatically control ventilation fans?

Yes. Sensor data can be processed by compatible equipment controllers to support automatic fan control. Thresholds, operating modes and protection logic are defined by the OEM.

Is 1000 ppm CO₂ a universal ventilation standard?

No. A single CO₂ concentration value is not a universal measure of ventilation compliance. CO₂ measurements should be interpreted according to occupancy, outdoor CO₂, building use and the applicable ventilation criteria.

Can ZPHS01C measure both HCHO and VOC simultaneously?

No. The standard ZPHS01C is offered in an HCHO version or a VOC version. Both functions are not provided simultaneously in the same standard configuration.

Does Winsen support OEM fresh-air sensor integration projects?

Winsen supports sensor selection, model-specific electrical interface discussions and application-level technical communication for ventilation equipment manufacturers.
